FrostClan

“Our ancestors were exiled for wrongs they did not do. They found solace in the cold that hardened their hearts into ice. We will bear this burden with honor until the day we wreak revenge.”

The Territory

FrostClan territory is a wide, flat plain far to the north that is surrounded on all sides by jagged mountains. In the summer, called the Red Moons due to the abundance of red heather, it is a boggy marshland while in the winter, called the Long Night, it is a frozen wasteland. Though anyone would be hard-pressed to see any cats aboveground, foxlengths below there is an interlacing web of tunnels that allow the FrostClan cats to traverse the entire length of their territory without stepping onto the surface once. Along the various paths are cave-in spots where FrostClan captures and kills their enemies. At the heart of these tunnels is the camp, also known as the Heart of Ice or simply “the Heart.” It is a massive cavern with hollows along the walls.

In the center of the Heart is the Ancestor’s Perch. It is a massive mountain of bones where it’s said that the ancestors sit to watch over the Clan. When an apprentice becomes a warrior, they’ll bring a bone from the first prey they ever caught, carved with their own designs to add to the bone pile.

In front of the Ancestor’s Perch is the leader’s den. It isn’t a den at all – it is the ribcage of a moose, woven with heather and lichen, and the antlers of the moose are where the leader perches during ceremonies and meetings.

To the right of the leader’s den is the nursery, set in a low hollow and covered from top to bottom in soft lichen. The floor is covered with feathers and moss to create a warm, soft place to give birth.

To the right of the nursery are the apprentice’s den and the warrior’s den. They’re both normal ice hollows filled with moss and lichen, with no outstanding traits.

To the left of the leader’s den is the medicine cat den. It has a pool of water in the center and the walls are pockmarked with holes that are filled with herbs.

To the left of the medicine den is the elder’s den. It is filled with bones carved with stories of long-ago battles and hunts. In the center is a giant pile of feathers where the elders sleep in a heap.

Down a long, straight pathway behind the leader’s den is the skeletal remains of the first Pure One, a giant cat with fangs longer than the tail of a normal cat. This is where FrostClan visits their ancestors, in the Den of the Ancients.

History

Frostheart’s Exile

Long ago, FrostClan’s ancestors were part of ShadeClan, far away from the frigid cold they now call their home. Frostheart, the first leader of FrostClan, was the deputy of this forest Clan and was set to take leadership. He was a cat of the Purest order – an albino. However, his Clanmates were jealous of him. They knew that he would have led the Clan into greatness but were infuriated that he, a Pure cat, would take over their Clan. They plotted in secret until one night they finally enacted their evil scheme.

While the cats were sleeping, the conspirators attacked and murdered the leader. Frostheart was blamed and scorned by his former Clanmates, driven to exile. Noble Dapplewing, fierce Blizzardleap, honorable Sagewhisper, cunning Swiftflight, and the lovely Blossomsnow were the only ones to protest Frostheart’s unfair treatment. They followed the rightful leader into the frosted tundra, where they found their home. Together they built a stronger, better Clan that has since flourished.

Legacy of the Bones

FrostClan has a long history with bones. They learned early on how to crack open bones and eat the life-saving marrow within. They often took to hunting down the carcasses of larger prey animals to take the precious food. This is how they began known as “bone-eaters.”

Then the cats began to carve the bones with whatever design crossed their mind. At first, it was just something to pass the time and sharpen their claws. Then it evolved into storytelling – when a cat inscribed a design on the bone, they instilled a story on it. Elders were tasked with remembering the stories instilled on certain bones – important victories, the lives of valiant leaders, the tragedies that would teach future generations. Even the story of Frostheart’s exile was inscribed on the moose antlers that the leaders perched upon.

Over the generations, apprentices began to keep a bone from the first piece of prey they ever caught and present it to a pile of story bones, hoping that one day their story would be told. This became the Ancestor’s Perch, where the ghosts of cats watch over their descendants.

The Pure Ones and the Carvers

FrostClan is divided into two – the Pure and the Impure. Cats who have been blessed by their ancestors are born with pelts the color of the ice – white, gray or black. In their past lives, they had been honorable warriors. Those who were scorned by the ancestors were born with the color of traitors – brown, red, and ginger – and were forest cats in their past lives, sent to FrostClan to atone for their sins in the cold ice.

Those who are Impure aren’t suited for the ice. They must suffer and learn so that in their next life they do not repeat their sins. Instead of being trained to hunt or fight, these cats are taught to interpret bones and help carve out tunnels by licking through the solid permafrost. They eat after the Pure cats but are not starved and will occasionally help with hunting when times are lean.
